As the Symbian operating
system becomes more and more popular so does the popularity of the Symbian
Applications. These are small files which are small computer programs
developed for a particular need/function. The applications are small in
size due to the mobiles capabilities in terms of storage (as the majority
of mobile devices have small storage systems) and to enable faster download
rates (if they are downloading straight to the mobile).
Symbian Applications are developed
using a computer programming language called C++.
C++ is the most popular programming
language in the world as much of the major Operating Systems and other
software is developed using this (Windows, Linux/Unix, etc). As Symbian
is open to third party developers, applications are being developed by
companies all around the world.
The best bet is to download Symbian
applications from trusted and authentic sites as problems have arisen
recently. Symbian malicous virus's
have been developed by unknown developers for one purpose, to destroy
people's mobile phones for all sorts of reasons. So be careful and avoid
sites which have not been approved.
Symbian has grown to a point where
all the major handset producers, Nokia, Siemens, etc have been awarding
sofware developers for outstanding Symbian
applications. In 2001 Nokia made a competition called the Nokia Mobile
Challenge to encourgae developers to develope applications for Symbian
phones. From applications which displays the weather to flight times all
sorts of applications have won and it is encouraging the developement. |
In October 2003, Nokia released the Ngage. The Ngage uses the Symbian
OS with Java support. It can do everything a normal Symbian
mobile can do but it was developed specifically as a 3D video games system.
It was released as competition to the Nintendo Gamboy as it can play a
number of games and already got a vast variety of games developed for
it such as Worms, Tomb Raider and FIFA Football by EA Sports. The games
